As the 162nd and 163rd liber amicorum in its collection, the Thuringian University and State Library recently began keeping the libri amicorum of the theology student and later pastor Johann Carl Bernhard Ernst Sallmann.
The liber amicorum, which was kept from 1776-1780, comprises 260 pages almost entirely filled with entries by Jena students and professors and also contains an entry by Johann Gottfried Müller, who was director of the university library from 1756-1792. In addition, the liber amicorum contains 20 high-quality gouaches with motifs from Jena and the surrounding area, a full-page watercolour, a coloured pen and ink drawing, 14 silhouettes and two copper engravings.
The second liber amicorum, kept from 1778-1817, does not contain any artistic decoration, but in addition to entries by professors, it does contain autographs by Samuel Thomas Soemmerring, Georg Forster, Johann August Starck, Johann Bering, Michael Conrad Curtius and Sophie von La Roche.
The digitisation of the two new acquisitions is planned. Please visit our platform Collections@UrMEL, to view the already digitised libri amicorum.
