The Friedrich Schiller University Jena (University of Jena) continues to participate in the DEAL contracts with Springer Nature and Wiley. It has also declared its participation in the recently concluded DEAL agreement with Elsevier. This will create the basis for affiliated, corresponding scientists at the University of Jena to publish their research results in the associated journals in open access and for users to gain access to the parts that are still subject to subscription.
The publication costs incurred for publishing are borne by the Thuringian University and State Library (ThULB), so that no separate costs are incurred for authors from the University of Jena. The ThULB is the central point of contact for researchers at the University of Jena in connection with DEAL.
The new DEAL agreements with a planned term until 2028 are based on the paper charge model, which in the case of Elsevier has already been fully implemented from the outset and will be gradually introduced for the other two providers. With this model, the future cost volume depends directly on the volume of publications, which poses particular challenges for research-intensive locations such as the University of Jena.
DEAL is a Germany-wide initiative of the Alliance of German Science Organisations. Under the leadership of the German Rectors' Conference, the DEAL consortium is negotiating nationwide open access transformation agreements with the providers Elsevier, Springer Nature and Wiley. In order for the DEAL agreements, which run until the end of 2028, to materialise, defined participation quotas have been set for German academic institutions, which must be achieved by mid-January (Elsevier), mid-February (Springer Nature) and the end of February (Wiley). Details of the contracts can be found on the ThULB website or directly under DEAL consortium.
