W1-Professur (mit Tenure Track nach W2) für Digitalisierte Experimentelle Mikroskopie

Financed by the German Tenure-Track Programme for Young Researchers, the Institute of Applied Optics and Biophysics of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena is recruiting a

Professor of Digitalized Experimental Microscopy (salary scale W1)

starting winter term 2019/2020. The position is tenable after 6 years.

The research area is intended to involve the development of novel data analysis methods for an improved acquisition of microscopy data. Specifically, the experimental setup, optical design and protocol of microscopy experiments shall be optimized using dedicated data analysis approaches, which will especially advance the use of the microscopes for life science research. The focus lies on optical microscopy and photonics, but may also involve other microscopy techniques such as X-ray or electron microscopy.

The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with interdisciplinary research groups of the University and to participate in existing and/or planned collaborative research initiatives of the University. Further, a strong involvement in teaching courses on microscopy, optics and/or biophysics is essential, and engagement in academic self-management is expected.

The candidate will have an outstanding doctorate in physics, chemistry, biophysics/biology and/or engineering with experience in microscopy and/or data analysis, and will ideally have existing national and international research cooperation. The applicants are expected to demonstrate their potential to produce international publications and their potential for quality teaching and supervision of undergraduate students, graduates, and doctoral candidates. Experience in acquisition of third-party funding would be an asset.

Applicants for this position must hold a university degree, be able to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and have a proven research track record that is normally demonstrated by an outstanding doctoral thesis. The length of their doctoral studies and employment period should not exceed six years in total. The initial appointment will be for four years. After a positive evaluation it will be extended for two more years. Upon successful completion of the final review after six years of employment, the position will be promoted to a professorship paid on salary scale W2.

The University is committed to increasing the number of women in research and teaching. Therefore, the University actively encourages qualified female scientists to apply. In case of equal qualifications, applicants who have a disability will be favoured over the others.

Your application should include the standard documents (curriculum vitae outlining past research and scientific work, copies of certificates, full bibliographic details of publication, list of teaching activities, concept for the planned research activities at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, and a list of third-party funding) and the filled application form (link). The closing date for applications is January 31st, 2019. Please submit your applications to the
